- After some time in Phoenix, we head north and first stop at Montezuma's Castle.
- Upon seeing the Grand Canyon, Kathryn asks, ?But where is the Grand Canyon??
- The sun is bright, but the views are great.
- The boys search the canyon floor for signs of trails.
- Our hotel is on the rim, and we can see the Grand Canyon from our beds.
- Nicholas frames the perfect shot.
- What's better than the Grand Canyon at sunset? The Grand Canyon with ice cream, of course!
- After the drips are washed off, we pose again with our Arizona backdrop.
- As the sun sets, Nicholas and Reed discuss adventures that begin with someone jumping off the rim of the Grand Canyon.
- The following morning, we're ready to head a little ways down the Bright Angel trail into the canyon.
- It's a very exciting hike.
- Mule trains pass, loaded with people riding to the bottom in style.
- The kids are anxious to keep walking, but we turn back several hundred feet below the rim.
- Then we plod back to the top of the Colorado Plateau.
- The Watch Tower is an interesting stop on the way out of the park.
- Nicholas and Reed relax inside the Watch Tower.
- On the way back to Phoenix, we stop at the Wapatuki Ruins. There is a blow hole near the ruins which blasts cold air from inisde the earth.
- We also see the Sunset Crater volcano at sunset.
- Meteor Crater lives up to its promise as a large hole in the ground.
- And back in Phoenix, the Arizona Science Museum entertains with an interactive computer display room.
- Playing with cousins Tonio and Emma is constant entertaiment on our Arizona vacation.

- Our hotel in Seattle overlooks the Space Needle.
- We visit the Ballard Farmers' Market and find yummy treats.
- Can you believe the mini donut machine?
- The strawberries are amazing!
- Reed gets a balloon sword from a very tall vendor.
- Kathryn gets a doll she names Sofia.
- We're off to see the Mariners play the Padres.
- Our seats are in right center field, where all the long home runs will land.
- Did you know they sell cotton candy at baseball games?
- It was free hat day at the ballpark.
- The Mariners won!
- We drive by the hospital where Reed was born. Where is the banner celebrating that event? It would surely drum up more business.
- It's the 4th of July and the Space Needle is decked out.
- It's a perfect day to ride the ferries.
- It's always windy out on the water. The boys enjoy it.
- We're on our way over to Bainbridge Island.
- As you can see, our ferry is the Puyallup. It's one on which Reed has traveled before.
- Mr. Rainier is still out and looking dramatic over the water.
- As we pull into Bainbridge Island the city's looking pretty far away.
- Once on the other side of the Puget Sound we drive up the coast. Along the way we stop for treats.
- We drive up to Kingston, where another ferry will take us back across the Sound. While we're waiting for the ferry to leave we spot a couple of seagull chicks nesting on top of the docks.
- Same deal, different ferry. We're farther north so the city is off in the distance, just under Mt. Rainier.
- The boys love hanging out on the most exposed areas of the ferry. Kathryn likes it up to a point and then prefers the inside seats.
- As we approach Edmonds, she comes back out to enjoy the wind in her hair.
- Edmonds is closer to our old stomping grounds. The kids take to the beach quickly, building small structures to be destroyed by the incoming tide.
- Kathryn works on the landscaping around her castle. Off in the distance is Mt. Baker. Or at least we think it is.
- We return to the hotel to find the lake filled with boats waiting for the evening fireworks.
- Our view of the fireworks is "filtered" by some tall trees so we decide to go down to a small playground area next to the lake. And as all kids do when there's a playground nearby, Reed and Nicholas play their DS to pass the time.
- The fireworks are great!
- And at the end of the day, the Space Needle is still there.
- After a morning touring the Boeing plant (no cameras or cell phones allowed) we head to Green Lake to enjoy the sunshine and warm temps.
- Yes, yes, we do have a paddle boat at home. But this is totally different.
- It's a beautiful day to boat on the lake.
- In the evening we hike down to the beach at Carkeek Park.
- Puget Sound could not be more beautiful on an evening like this.
- A train comes along the coast, and Matt stands on the bridge to see it go underneath.
- The kids stay back on the beach to explore the tide pool.
- The tide is coming in!
- Reed and Nicholas wait for the advancing tide to mow over their sand creations.
- Help! I'm being eaten by a giant salmon (slide).
- Kathryn is thrilled to make it to the top of the Space Needle.
- Kathryn takes a picture of Mom, Dad and Nicholas on top of the Space Needle.
- The view from the tippie-top.
- Apparently, anyone weighing less than 500 pounds is completely safe on this bike rail.
- The duck/boat tour of Seattle is good, silly fun.
- The WWII-era craft is sea-worthy, and we take to Lake Union.
- Kathryn blows her quacker whistle only from time-to-time.
- Kathryn pets a sea anemone at the Pacific Science Center.
- Dad, get in the Monorail! We are leaving the station.
- The Space Needle was once mariner orange. Why isn't it now?
- We're at the Pike Place Market and ready to shop!
- To market, to market to buy a fat pig.
- Or, maybe we'll buy vegetables, instead.
- The flowers are something else at the Pike Place Market.
- But, puppets last longer. We also picked up Rainier cherries.
- Kathryn knows all about farmers' markets.
- Every height can be accommodated on this bench, handily located to give rest as we climb downtown hilly streets.
- On our last day in Seattle before leaving for Mt. Rainier we visit Fremont, an 'eclectic artistic hippie' area where Adobe is based.
Apparently a TV crew was filming today.
- Among the strange and curious, the troll sculpture under the Aurora Bridge.
- We wrap up the visit to Fremont with an office tour, ending on the roof seating for the cafe. Free drinks for all!
- And then we head out of town for the three hour (one of them sitting in traffic in Puyallup, sigh) trip to Mt. Rainier. On the way up to the hotel we stop by Narada falls.
- Nice falls, but it throws off a cold, cold mist. It's like taking a cold shower in a refrigerator.
And yes, we do know that it has been very, very hot in Illinois.
- Finally we get to the hotel, the Paradise Inn. Nicholas enjoys the view out the window. That large white area out the window is a huge pile of snow.
You might also note in this picture the complete absence of any wireless internet or phone service. Most distressing, but we did survive.
- And if you look a little higher out of the window you see the ever-present 14,410 foot Mt. Rainier.
- Another fun feature of the hotel is the adjacent snow field. You can follow that right on up to the top of the mountain, if you like. We did not. But we did have a lot of fun playing in it.
- The hotel is at 5,400 ft of elevation, so it's another 9,000 to the top.
- On our first full day at the park we start with a visit to the "Grove of the Patriarchs." To get there you have to walk for a while and then cross a bridge to a relatively isolated patch of forest.
- After the Grove, we head south along the trail to Silver Falls. Lots and lots of water moving very quickly.
- Normally this would have been the perfect time of year to be at Paradise Inn to see fields full of wildflowers. However, due to high snowfall this spring those fields are under 10 feet of snow. Still, there are patches here and there on the roads and trails.
- Whereas the previous day we drove east for our hikes, today we head west to the Longmire area. In both cases we had to drive down to lower altitudes to hike, since all of the lovely trails around Paradise are covered with snow. Actually, we did get to do a Paradise hike, but more on that later.
But first, a photo opportunity along the road.
- There's a little deer family that seems to enjoy grazing among the switchbacks.
- When we get to the Longmire area (about a 30 minute drive) we go on a nature walk followed by a longer trail to Carter Falls. To get to the latter you first have to cross the Nisqually river. And what better way to cross fast moving frigid waters than on a log cut in half with a railing bolted onto one side?
- It's a long uphill walk after that, but the kids are pretty good hikers.
- At the top are a couple of dramatic waterfalls. And all along the way you can hear the rushing water. The temperatures are wonderful for hiking, in the 60's.
- Kathryn decides the most fun thing to do when around water is to find rocks to throw in. Preferably ones that make a nice 'bloop' sound.
- On Sunday we get all adventurous and strap on some snowshoes for a walk that would normally be done through meadows of wildflowers.
- The boys take to them very quickly. (Unfortunately the snowshoe rental place did not have any in sizes that Kathryn could use.)
- Ironically the boys are just as fascinated by their new hobby. Which can only be described as "build something which will be destroyed by the forces of nature." Which can be sand and waves, or snow buildings and the runoff of melting snowfields.
- We have a picnic dinner at the oversized wooden tables and log furniture in the lobby of the hotel. Slightly out of the picture is the piano player providing music for the occasion.
- Every evening the kids clamor for time on the snow fields. And a snow field calls for snowballs ...
- ... and more snowballs ...
- ... and even some snowballs aimed at photographers ...
- ... and even snowballs in the middle of a portrait. A fine time for all at Paradise.
- On our last morning in the park we take one last hike on the western side of the park, along a section that used to be a road that the Park Service got tired of repairing after floods.
- Kathryn keeps working on her rock choosing and throwing skills.
- And, following her brothers' lead, she works on her Stone Age rock pounding skills. What hike?
- It's a good way to end our trip to Mt. Rainier.
- See you again sometime! (Yes, we did take this picture last, not first.)
All that's left now is to get back to Seattle and get our stuff packed up for our flights back to Illinois tomorrow.

- We fly to Phoenix for Spring Break and spend the weekend with cousins Emma, Tonio and Sara. We go swimming.
- We hike at South Mountain Park.
- Then we rent a 30-foot-long RV and hit the open road.
- Our first destination is Fool Hollow Lake state park, in northeast Arizona.
- While touring the Petrified Forest National Park, we see ruins, petroglyphs and petrified wood.
- Several short and medium-length hikes take us close to interesting geology.
- Some of the petrified logs are huge!
- Smaller pieces look like wood, but are heavy as rocks.
- You can even see growth rings preserved in the stone.
- The kids pick up every rock they can reach from the trails.
- It's so convenient to find our home-away-from-home in the parking lot.
- It's a full day at the Petrified Forest.
- Our last stop is an ancient home made from petrified logs.
- At our next camp ground, the kids horse around in their favorite perch.
- Pottery shards are everywhere at the Homolovi Ruins.
- The Lost Dutchman state park overlooks Superstition Mountains.
- Yellow poppies bloom along the trail up to Green Rock.
- We made it!
- On the way back down, Matt and Reed look forward to a spaghetti dinner.
- Emma, Tonio, Sara and Aunt Carolyn meet us at our campsite for dessert.
- We roast marshmallows over the fire.
- Delicious!
- Everyone gets the idea, and fills up on sweets.
- One more hike at Papago Park fills the last morning of our vacation.
- Some of the trails are paved....
- ....and some trails are just rock scrambling. It's a great week in Arizona!

- Feet in two hemispheres.
- Another picture from Greenwich shows Nicholas trying on the wares.
- Is that Harrod's in the distance?
- Wellington Arch is fun to climb.
- We go early to get a good spot to watch the Trooping the Colour birthday celebration for Queen Elizabeth II.
- Camilla, Princess Kate and Prince Harry ride by.
- We are thrilled to see the Queen and Prince Philip.
- I'm sure the Queen is enjoying birthday cake at Buckingham Palace.
- Nicholas takes King Henry's spot at Hampton Court.
- The rose garden is more than ready for us.
- After all these years, Matt and I can still climb the steps to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral.
- It's a St. Paul's selfie.
- We see the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London and then take another look at Tower Bridge.
- Stonehenge now comes with an audio tour. Nicholas and Reed change the language and listen to parts in Chinese.
- Lunch outside Salisbury Cathedral is lovely; then we pop inside to see the Magna Carta on its 800th birthday.
- They say Woodhenge was built as a counterpart to Stonehenge.
- We take a trek up to see the ancient burial site of West Kennett.
- Avebury is a stone circle similar to Stonehenge, but oddly today it sits in the middle of a village. Yes, they sell ice cream.
- We climb another Christopher Wren project...the monument to the London fire of 1666.
- Kathryn has lunch outside Kensington Palace before going inside to see dresses once worn by Princess Diana.
- The British Museum is worth two visits.
- The Big Ben bells chime while we gawk.
- Completing a scavenger hunt at Westminster Cathedral nets chocolate coins for Kathryn and Nicholas. They share with Reed, who helped answer quiz questions inside.
- Leaving London behind, we move in to a lodge on the grounds of Fountains Abbey.
- The Devil's Arrows were a fun stop when Matt and I last visited, so we take the kids there, too.
- A day spent cruising the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is super fun.
- All hands are needed to open the lock.
- If Reed can pilot a canal boat, I'm sure getting his driver's license will be easy.
- The top of Clifford's Tower in York yields a view.
- Grandma and Grandpa peek through the ancient city walls.
- York Minster in the rain is still pretty.
- Hadrian's Wall marks the farthest point north of our trip.
- A major fort along the wall once had rooms with heated floors; today only the pillars supporting the floors are left.
- Barnard Castle was once a home of King Richard III.
- Brimham Rocks draws lovers of rock scambling.
- Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire Dales National Park offers a pretty walk and a good stop for tea and scones.
- After watching ropemaking in Hawes, we relax at a playground.
- The Penine Way trail crosses England.
- Fish and chips is lunch today.
- An odd modern sculpture called Coldstone Cut overlooks an active quarry and combines a stone maze with big machines.
- What a huge trip with three kids who couldn't have been better behaved or more fun.
- Yes, they must be angels.

- Over Thanksgiving, cousins Emma, Tonio and Sara visit with their cousin Rodolfo. The girls decide to open a breakfast restaurant called the Western Valley. Cowboy boots with flowers in them are the theme.
- Emma, Kathryn and Sara serve up omelets, fruit salad, waffles, smoothies, turkey bacon and bagels.
- Kathryn picks cherry blossoms for her 10th birthday party theme.
- Sara, Emma and Kathryn decorate a fancy cake.
- Kathryn hopes for warm winter weather so she can ride her new bike.
- It's raining, so the light is low for the annual kids-in-front-of-tree-loaded-van picture.
- Happy 10th Birthday to Kathryn!
- We go with Aunt Carolyn's family to select this year's Christmas tree.
- Reed uses a tool to place high ornaments.
- We are getting ready for Christmas!
- Nicholas, Rodolfo and Tonio mess around with the remains of a snowman they built when the day was colder.
- Kathryn shows Sara and Emma an art piece she made on display at a coffee store. Kathryn's is above her head in the purple frame.

- We fly to London, rest a night, then take the train to St. Pancras Station to catch the Eurostar to Paris.
- Carolyn, Miguel, Emma, Tonio and Sara are already in London seeing the sights. They meet us for coffee at the train station; they will meet us in Paris in a few days.
- Nicholas passes the time at the station.
- Kathryn passes the time at the station's macaron store.
- We board the train to travel under the Chunnel to Paris.
- Nicholas passes the time in our Paris apartment.
- We are right around the corner from the Eiffel Tower.
- We are tired, so tour via a water taxi.
- More rested, we also get an overview of Paris on an excellent bike tour.
- We ride bikes across the Pont Alexandre III.
- After lunch outside in the Tuileries Garden, we take a selfie.
- Carolyn's family arrives, so we show them the Eiffel Tower.
- Many pictures are collected.
- While Carolyn's family takes a bike tour, we visit the Pompidou Center and sail past Notre Dame again to the Jardin des Plantes.
June 22, 2018
- Today we are visiting Versailles by bike. First, we need to gather yummy picnic supplies.
- Reed is carrying our baguettes.
- Matt also carries lunch essentials.
- The fountains are turned on while we visit the grounds of Versailles.
- It is shaping up to be a beautiful day.
- Because we have bikes, we can reach many of the lovely fountains on the grounds.
- Nicholas starts his picnic lunch early.
- Along the canal, we pause to enjoy a picnic of fruit, bread, cheese, olives, wine and desserts. The hunting lodge known as Versailles is in the distance.
- We will use bikes to reach the other palaces at Versailles.
- Marie Antoinette built a rustic village folly including homes, gardens, livestock and a waterwheel.
- We prepare to enter the main palace.
- The Hall of Mirrors is very crowded and very beautiful.
- Macarons at Versailles are a sweet snack.
- Back in Paris, we take a walking tour of Montmartre, ending at Sacre Coeur.
- Sadly, most of the gift shops in Paris carry exactly the same items; we double-check.
- Happy Father's Day from the Arc de Triomphe.
- An evening cruise on the Seine is timed to see the lights on the Eiffel Tower.
- After sparkling, the tower lights up completely.
- Reed visits Monet's lilies at the Musee Orangerie.
- A walking tour of Sainte Chapelle and Notre Dame includes a climb to the top of the bell towers. Kathryn enjoys seeing the structure she once made from gingerbread.
- After the tour, we enjoy ice cream on the Ile Saint Louis.
- It's finally time to climb the Eiffel Tower!
- We stop at all the viewing platforms.
- Clockwise from under the Eiffel Tower: Nicholas, Reed, Tonio, Emma, Sara and Kathryn.
- After Paris we take the train to Brussels. Kathryn and Sara make a delicious chocolate cake for dessert when we arrive.
- Our town home in Brussels has many floors, and is great for playing hide and seek.
- The nearby Grand Place features gold-tipped buildings and stores selling delicious chocolate.
- Belgium fries from Fritland are an (almost) daily favorite.
- We visit the European Parliament, including the room where debates take place.
- One day we take a crowded train to Ghent to visit its castle and take a boat tour of its canals.
- The day and the city are lovely.
- The canals no longer carry goods to Ghent, but the waterways are fun for tour boats and kayaks.
June 29, 2018
- Tonio gets a souvenir soccer ball and plays with Nicholas while we wait to watch a World Cup game on tv.
- The Atomium, built for the 1928 World's Fair, is a structure you can go inside. What a curious building with good views of Brussels.
- An elevator takes you to a top ball, and we go inside some of the other ones by escalators.
- The kids find the welcome sign out front entertaining, as well.
- Everyone climbs on all the letters for quite some time.
- After dinner, some of us are hungry for Belgium waffles.
- They are both delicious and huge, best for sharing next time.
- The fries are also great for sharing.
- Even just strolling the streets is entertaining.
- After Carolyn's family goes home, we stay in Belgium for a few days. We visit a comic museum, including their comics library.
- Belgium is known for their comics, and scenes from their classic comics are painted on buildings around town.
- We look over the Royal Palace while walking around the Upper Town of Brussels.
- A long bike tunnel takes us from one side of the river to the other.
- During a day in Antwerp, we enjoy another bike tour.
- After returning to the center of Antwerp via a ferry, we look over the Grote Markt with its Brabo Fountain.
- On our last day of vacation, we take the train back to London and spend a few hours touring. First, we climb St. Paul's.
- After a picnic lunch in the shadow of St. Paul's, we visit the Victoria and Albert Museum. Nicholas is more interested in his game on this day.
- We close the day with a loop on the London Eye ferris wheel.
- What a sweet vacation!

- Jasper is gorgeous, and we could easily spend more time there.
- We drive past Medicine Lake on the way to a boat cruise on Maligne Lake.
- Spirit Island is the turn-around point for the cruise. We walk the shoreline to get good views of the famous island/isthmus.
- On the return trip, I try to decide what color Maligne Lake really is.
- Matt stands on the back deck of the boat.
- This morning we drive back down the Icefields Parkway to the Columbia Glacier.
- We ride a specialized ice truck out onto the glacier.
- A row of national flags marks the safe walking boundary on the glacier.
- Of course, Nicholas wears shorts to visit a glacier.
- Kathryn objects to so many photos.
- A glass bridge near the Athabasca Glacier holds us 300 meters above the valley floor.
- On the way to Lake Louise we stop to enjoy more views and great weather.
- Lake Louise is packed with tourists, but we are staying nearby and hope to avoid crowds by leaving for hikes early.
- We head up to Lake Louise at 7 to catch the last open parking space in the lot and hike up to the Lake Agnes Teahouse.
- Lake Agnes is fine, but the teahouse is already crowded, so three of us get a table and two wait outside. Mirror Lake along the trail lives up to its name.
- Nicholas and I watch the tea maker gather Lake Agnes water for tea.
- Nicholas and Matt hike on to Big Beehive and get a great view of Lake Louise and the Fairmont Hotel.
- Kathryn enjoys the close-up view of Lake Louise.
- Today we hiked at Emerald Lake in Yoho National Park.
- The Emerald Basin trail leads up to the base of waterfalls (just above and to the left of Kathryn).
- We pause for a snack at the end of the trail and then head back to Emerald Lake for lunch.
- After lunch we rent canoes.
- Nicholas makes the ride interesting.
- It's an excellent activity, and far less crowded than at Lake Louise.
- We arrive at Lake Louise early in the morning for a hike up the Plain of Six Glaciers trail. The clouds are very low.
- Rain from last night makes the top end of the lake tricky to pass.
- We climb above the cloud layer and get beautiful views on the way to the Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse.
- We pause for tea and hot cocoa at the teahouse.
- The climb continues up to the base of the Victoria Glacier. We can hear the thunder of small avalanches, but are never looking in the right place to see one. Turning downhill, we can see Lake Louise in the distance, still under some cloud cover.
- The kids choose to stay behind while we rent bikes to ride 13 km to Moraine Lake. The parking lot fills at 5:30am and the shuttle buses require long waits in line, but bikes are welcome when the road to the lake is closed.
- It's important to note that the bikes were electric bikes, and we felt like we were pedaling downhill the entire time.
- Nicholas and Dad hike the Fairview Mountain trail.
- They make it above the morning clouds and to the summit.
- It's time to head back down for lunch.
- Meanwhile, the others hike to a lookout above Lake Louise.
- Then we sit on the shore and eat candy while Kathryn sketches.
- On the way from Lake Louise to Canmore we stop in Banff for a few sights and lunch. Banff has hoodoos. These are they. Not exactly Bryce but fun to look at anyway.
- We arrive in Canmore a few hours before we can check in to the condo. To fill a bit of time we stop by Quarry Lake, which is actually an old coal mine pit filled with 80 feet of water and turned into a park. It's cold with a stiff wind as a front pushes in, but Kathryn gathers a bouquet for Mom. Not shown: two separate wedding parties doing their photography nearby.
- After dinner we stroll down to the nearby Engine Bridge, a former coal train line bridge repurposed to let a pedestrian trail cross the Bow River. Canmore has a very extensive trail system for hikers and mountain bikers.
- A large Canadian flag flies above the Canmore Nordic Centre, where some of the 1988 Olympics were held. We hike up here from the condo on one of the local trails. We look at where the shooting sports were held and walk back down. Alas, the low clouds hide all the lovely mountains.
- Canmore has a bunny problem. Some years ago someone released a few domestic rabbits and they grew to a population of more than 2,000. They've been trying to cull them, but them rabbits is wily. This one is just outside our condo.
- This evening we drive on a steep road up to an overlook at the reservoir above the city. Kathryn is too cold to stay but the boys stand for a picture. Once again, there's a trail that would get you here from our condo far, far below.
- The views from the condo (on the 4th floor) are lovely. They include Mt. Rundle, Mt. Lady MacDonald, and... the supermarket. At least it's convenient!

- We host two high school students from France for the week. They are Maureen and Chloe.
- They go to school with Kathryn and spend the week outside of school soaking up American life. Activities include: ice skating, a corn maze, bowling, pottery painting, shopping at the mall, Custard Cup, fast food, a campus tour, the farmers' market, an Illini football game, a Krannert performance, a picnic, a party, Starbuck's, mac and cheese, a city council meeting and the Lincoln Museum in Springfield
- Nicholas's roommate sends another photo of our boy. We think this is in Bloomington, stopping for a donut snack after bouldering there.
